Disney MagicBand FAQ
Straight answers about MagicBands, drawn from a catalog of all 1,379 ever released.
How many Disney MagicBands are there?
Disney has released 1,379 different MagicBands since the program began in 2013. Of those, 262 have a published edition size, meaning Disney stated exactly how many were made. The rest were produced in undisclosed quantities. 2021 was the busiest year with 236 releases, and output has fallen sharply since.
What is the rarest Disney MagicBand?
The Tapestry of Nations 20th Anniversary MagicBand is the rarest with a published edition size, at just 300 made, released September 28, 2019. Promotional and Cast Member bands were never sold publicly and some of those are almost certainly scarcer still, but Disney never published their quantities so they cannot be ranked.
What is the most valuable Disney MagicBand?
Based on current eBay listings, the Toy Story 25th Anniversary MagicBand carries the highest typical asking price at $1,124.95, against an original retail of $34.99. Prices move constantly and these are asking prices on active listings rather than completed sales.
What is the difference between Limited Edition, Limited Release and Open Edition MagicBands?
A Limited Edition MagicBand is produced in a fixed, published quantity and never reissued, so supply only shrinks. A Limited Release is not numbered but is produced in restricted quantities and retired once stock is gone, which is why they often outperform open editions on resale. An Open Edition stays in production for as long as it sells, making it the most widely available type, and those tend to resell close to their original retail price.
Are Disney MagicBands discontinued?
Disney stopped giving MagicBands to resort guests free of charge in 2021 and has been steering guests toward the phone-based MagicMobile since. Bands are still sold, but new releases have slowed dramatically: from 236 in 2021 to 19 in 2026. Most bands in this catalog are no longer available from Disney and can only be bought secondhand.
How much is my MagicBand worth?
Most MagicBands are worth somewhere near their original retail price, which across this catalog has a median of $34.99. The exceptions are the numbered Limited Editions with small runs and the Promotional bands that were never sold publicly, which is where meaningful money changes hands. Find your band in our catalog to see its edition size, original price and current asking prices.
How do I identify which MagicBand I have?
Check the barcode or SKU printed on the packaging, which is the most reliable identifier, and search for it here. Failing that, the artwork, the band color and the generation all narrow it down. MagicBand 1 is the original one-piece design from 2013, MagicBand 2 introduced a removable puck in 2017, and MagicBand+ is the rechargeable version launched in 2022 with light and haptic effects.
Do old MagicBands still work at Disney parks?
MagicBand 2 and MagicBand+ remain in use. Original MagicBand 1 units are no longer supported for park entry and payments, and they cannot be used with MagicBand 2 accessories because the puck is not removable. A band that has previously been linked to another guest account also needs unlinking before it can be reused, which is one reason unused sealed bands carry a premium.
What is a MagicBand On Demand?
MagicBand On Demand designs were printed to order at kiosks in the parks rather than produced in advance, so how many exist depends entirely on how many guests chose that artwork. This catalog holds 1,379 bands in total, of which the On Demand designs are among the hardest to value because no production figure exists for any of them.
Are MagicBands a good investment?
For most bands, no. The large majority were produced in quantities well beyond collector demand and Open Editions in particular rarely appreciate. The numbered Limited Editions with small runs have a track record of holding or gaining value, and even then condition determines most of the difference between two copies of the same band. It is better treated as collecting than as an asset class.
